\nAfrican Elephants are extremely endangered. E xperts estimate that poachers kill close to 100 elephants a day for their tusks\; at this rate\, without help\, the wild African Elephant could beco me extinct as early as 2030.
\nTo raise awareness of this immediate crisis\, The Watering Hole Foundation\, Ana for Elephants\, and lead artis ts Alex Beard and Jacques Duffourc\, began building a life-size paper mach e African Elephant on Esplanade Avenue\, right in the heart of Jazz Fest. Festival goers were invited to participate in the art installation by appl ying strips of paper in a symbolic gesture of support of the 35\,000 eleph ants illegally killed each year.
\nFunds raised by the project will support two efforts in the Ngare Ndare Forest\, a UNESCO World Heritage Si te in Northern Kenya and one of the few remaining regional habitats of the African Elephant: 1) the acquisition of a Land Cruiser to be used by loca l anti-poaching game wardens and 2) a tree planting effort throughout the forest\, which will preserve the habitat while supporting community farms and farmers.
